Crossclimb #653 Answer – February 12, 2026
ROOTWORD
Answer
ROOTWORD
Combo Clue
“A two-part phrase for a unit of speech that carries its core meaning and cannot be further reduced into smaller parts. Keep in mind: The first part may be at the bottom.”
📖 How I Solved It
So, I dove into puzzle #653 with high hopes. The combo clue about a unit of speech had me scratching my head for a bit. I mean, 'first part may be at the bottom'? I was convinced it had to do with something else entirely at first. I guessed 'SPEECH' at one point, but that didn’t fit with the word ladder at all. I finally figured out it was 'ROOTWORD' after I realized that the first part, 'ROOT', could indeed be at the bottom of the clue. The word ladder was pretty smooth sailing after that, but it was definitely that initial clue that tripped me up. I really had to think it through to get from 'ROOT' all the way to 'WORD'.
💡 Tips for This Puzzle
- •Focus on the word ladder; it helps to visualize the connections.
- •Don't get stuck on the clue's initial wording—try breaking it down.
- •Remember that 'ROOT' can relate to multiple meanings, so keep an open mind.
